Services areas on “Golden Ring”
URSS
1989
The golden ring of Russia is a road that develops for 720 km north-east of Moscow touching ten cities of great historical and tourist interest.
The Ministry of Transport of the Soviet Union has decided to equip this road with service points and stops for travelers. These are configured as real gates of the city, meeting places for tourists and inhabitants.
The program requires service points of different sizes, subsequently expandable, defined by a clear, recognizable and recurring image.
In the absence of clear information regarding both the orography and the vegetation of the site, not yet precisely localized, and the quantitative consistency, simple elements were designed governed by a logic
of "proximity"; precise rules of aggregation, orientation, distances, soil treatment (ground support, paths, parking lots, green) are the result of the search for a morphological order that binds the elements according to a "necessary" order. Those related to the automotive use (distributor, workshop, shop) were arranged around a precise geometric figure, the octagon, which allowed to limit the paved surface of the squares and to reach the optimal solution of vehicle circulation.
Two figures were then set, that of the camping and that of the bungalows, independent of the first, following the idea of the juxtaposition of strong morphologies.
The external circle arc described by the embankment
which contains the hotel equipment marks the settlement limit and gives unity to all the elements.
