Extension of the municipal library
Stockholm, Sweden
2006
international competition
The new extension redesigns the morphology of the entire area, reshaping the hilly terrain by modeling the isometric curves as to form a new north side of the hill: a natural background for the Asplund building which, freed of two of the three existing buildings on the east side, emphasizes its function as a landmark along the main urban roads. The articulated project of the library is developed within this “land architecture”, an organic continuation of the orography of the area.
The five floors of the library extend between the steep existing slope of the hill and the new roof plan, which smoothly joins the different levels of the hill.
